Guest network
A guest network is intended to provide internet access without exposing the same local resources as the trusted household network. Check whether your router actually blocks guest-to-LAN traffic and guest-to-guest traffic if those behaviors matter to you.
IoT network
Some routers provide a dedicated IoT SSID that can simplify support for 2.4 GHz-only devices or isolate less-trusted equipment. Product behavior varies, and some smart-home ecosystems need local-device communication to work correctly.
Separate credentials
Using different credentials for guest access means the primary Wi‑Fi password does not have to be shared with visitors.
Device lifecycle
Smart devices should receive security updates where the vendor provides them. A device that has lost support can remain a network risk even if the Wi‑Fi password itself is strong.
