What Wi‑Fi 6 changed

Wi‑Fi 6 emphasized efficiency in busy networks as well as peak speed. Features associated with 802.11ax include OFDMA and improved multi-user operation, helping an access point schedule airtime more efficiently among many devices.

What 6E means

Wi‑Fi 6E is not a new IEEE generation after Wi‑Fi 6; it is Wi‑Fi 6/802.11ax operation extended into the 6 GHz band. The practical advantage is access to additional spectrum where the regulatory domain permits it.

Wi‑Fi 7 is now a finalized IEEE standard

IEEE 802.11be-2024, associated with Wi‑Fi 7, was published July 22, 2025. It adds capabilities aimed at extremely high throughput and lower/more predictable latency, including wider channels where spectrum permits and multi-link operation.

Should you upgrade?

Upgrade when you have a real constraint: an old router no longer receives security updates, you need better coverage architecture, many newer clients can use added capacity, or your local network is slower than your service. A new Wi‑Fi generation will not fix a slow ISP plan or poor access-point placement by itself.

Networking capabilities vary by hardware, firmware, ISP, country and radio environment. Settings names differ among manufacturers, so use your device's current documentation for product-specific changes.
