IPv4 vs IPv6 for home users

IP addresses let network devices send packets across interconnected networks. IPv6 expands address space and changes parts of network operation, but applications usually hide most of the difference from home users.

What IP does

Internet Protocol provides addressing and packet delivery across networks. IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions in widespread use.

IPv4

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses. Because globally unique IPv4 address space is limited, home networks commonly use private addresses behind network address translation (NAT).

IPv6

IPv6 is specified by RFC 8200 and uses a much larger address space. ISPs may provide native IPv6 alongside IPv4, sometimes called dual stack.

IPv6 still needs normal security

IPv6 does not eliminate the need for firewall policy, updates and secure device configuration. Avoid disabling it solely because unfamiliar addresses look different.

What home users need to do

If your ISP and router support IPv6 correctly, leaving supported defaults in place is usually simpler than forcing custom tunnel or addressing settings without a specific need.

Networking capabilities vary by hardware, firmware, ISP, country and radio environment. Settings names differ among manufacturers, so use your device's current documentation for product-specific changes.
